Spanish Language Day / World Book Day / Copyright Day

April 23
“Spanish Language Day / World Book Day / Copyright Day”

April 23rd is a very special day. It is full of symbols and traditions for many countries in Europe as well as the world of literature. On this day in the same year, three important authors, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilasco de la Vega all died and it is the same day when other three writers and poets, such as Maurice Druon, Josep Pla, Manuel Mejía Vallejo were born or died. So, it was a sensible choice for UNESCO to pay tribute not only to these authors but also to books on the World Book and Copyright Day.

The World Book Day is a celebration created in 1995 by UNESCO. Its purpose is to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors who have contributed to the social and cultural progress of humanity, to encourage reading and a love of books and to discover the pleasure of reading.
